Report from Fearless Forager, week of 07.07.2008

Here’s what she’s got planned for the Local Box this week:

  • purple hull OR black-eyed peas
  • watermelon
  • peaches
  • slicing tomatoes
  • head lettuce
  • blueberries
  • yellow squash
  • zucchini
  • okra
  • mint
  • key limes
  • heirloom cantaloupe
  • eggplant
  • yellow granix or red burgundy onion
  • banana, Anaheim OR jalapeno peppers
  • sunflower sprouts

Hmm… mint and limes… mojitos, anyone???

    I read your recipe on the Greenling newsletter and noticed in the recipe that you used canned chicken stock.
    With BPA concerns and the fact that it was probably not produced locally may I suggest an alternative?
    Make your own chicken stock from a yummy Dewberry Hills Farms Pastured chicken (available from Greenling, or cheaper direct from Terry and Jane the farmers at the Sunset Valley or Pflugerville Farmers Markets).
    This chicken is by far the tastiest I have ever had and makes excellent stock and soups.
    Plus there is always the great bonus that you get to eat it first before making stock!

    For me the bonus is that their raising and slaughtering practises are in line with Halal guidelines for permissable meat for Muslims. So finally I can have good quality meat which does not contradict my faith.
